The Advantages of Living in Penne

The fruit are local and available mainly in the summer, while fresh vegetables are available all year round with seasonal variations: some types are available in winter, while others in summer.

Tomatoes brought in fresh every morning by local farmers are a staple, along with melons, watermelons, peaches, and apples grown in the region. Olive oil is also a local product, with the town surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. Several wineries offer the chance to buy wine directly from the producer at advantageous prices; Abruzzo counts over 250 wine producers. Fresh eggs from farmers sell for about 50 cents each.

Dining out is affordable, with meals including drinks for 15 to 20 euros, and a Margherita pizza costing around 6.50 euros. Penne has 5 supermarkets and many small to medium-sized shops. About 30 km away are Ikea, Decathlon, and various shopping centers. The town also has 3 banks.

For those who value healthcare and services, Penne has a hospital with an emergency room just 1 km from Casa Vanni. The town offers daycare centers, primary and secondary schools, including scientific high schools, technical schools, and schools for surveyors — perfect for raising children in a peaceful environment.

Local taxes are minimal: no property tax (IMU) on primary residences, waste disposal costs roughly 400 euros per year (depending on property size), and water costs about 150 euros per year.

Penne is 30 km from Pescara airport, served by Ryanair to various destinations, and also 30 km from the train station. The town lies 30 km from Rigopiano (1200 meters altitude) and 40 minutes from Campo Imperatore (1600 meters). To the east, a 30-minute drive brings you to sandy beaches, while to the south are the trabocchi—traditional wooden fishing platforms where you can also dine.

The longest coastal cycling route between Ortona and Vasto is easily accessible.

Finally, the artificial lake and protected nature reserve are among Italy’s oldest, with a visitor center where you can observe hybrid wolves and access many walking trails around the lake, including a Tibetan bridge built by the cooperative managing the reserve.
